“A case for melancholy as an authentic and worthy state of being […] maybe even a state to be cherished.” – Chicago Tribune
Tilly is consumed by a melancholy so exquisite that no one can resist her. Her tailor, her hairdresser, and even her therapist succumb to the allure of her perpetual sadness. But when Tilly inexplicably discovers happiness, her joy wreaks havoc on the lives of her paramours. Contrary to its title, this whimsical comedy by award-winning playwright Sarah Ruhl will make you fall in love with love.
Reviews
“Despite its title, Melancholy Play is very funny. It’s presented as a melodrama, which works because the fine cast is able to blend high theatricality with total relatability. No matter how out there things get (and in the second half, they get pretty out there), the actors are able to keep the show grounded…I highly recommend this weird and wonderful chamber musical about the beauty of sadness.” –Broadway World
“Third Rail Repertory Theatre has successfully captured the script’s peculiar combination of mocking wit and profound tenderness. You may not have asked for an alternately deadpan and sincere meditation on melancholy, joy and depression, but after seeing this production, it seems like the most obvious thing in the world.” –Willamette Week
