In 2007 Gretchen appeared in Third Rail's production of A Lesson From Aloes, for which performance she received a Drammy award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress.

Gretchen has appeared on and off Broadway and in leading roles in prominent regional theatres across the country, including the New York Shakespeare Festival , Circle-in-the-Square, the Eugene O'Neill Festival, the Long Wharf Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and the New Jersey and Oregon Shakespeare Festivals, among others.

In addition she has appeared in numerous films, television series and movies made for television.

Local stage appearances have included The Visit for Sojourn Theatre; Dancing at Lugnasa, Sylvia and King Lear for Portland Center Stage; as well as award-winning performances in Happy Days, Molly Sweeney and It Had to Be You.
