Third Rail Announces Its 2009-2010 Season
Third Rail's next season at the World Trade Center Theater has been selected! (Subscribers, you've been privy to this news for some time now -- membership has its priveleges -- please forgive the repetition.)
At Third Rail, we love a challenge. Our move downtown in 2008, a huge undertaking, has come off with astonishing success. Audiences love the new space and our subscriber base has grown way beyond our expectations. Thank you!
But 2008 is so "last year." To keep up the adrenalin rush of this first season in our new home, in 2009-2010 we'll be tackling another batch of "firsts." With each of next season's plays we're venturing into new territory. The results are sure to be electric and we know you'll want to join us.
A Very Special Third Rail Christmas
The Lying Kind by Anthony Neilson, November 13 - December 13, 2009
When, we were recently asked, would Third Rail venture into the holiday fray? Well, fasten your sleighbells! With Anthony Neilson's amazing farce, the time has come. It's Christmas Eve in London, and two hapless policemen must deliver tragic news to an elderly couple. When they "practice to deceive," the consequences are immediate, dire, and absolutely side-splitting. With flirty septuagenarians, fearsome vigilantes, misplaced chihuahuas, stodgy vicars and, of course, naughty underwear, The Lying Kind takes classic farce and twists it, hard. It's all very Third Rail, and a perfect way to usher in the holiday season.
A Guest Director Takes the Reins
American Buffalo by David Mamet, February 5 - March 7, 2010
American Buffalo was one of David Mamet's earliest successes and is now considered an American classic. In this comic drama of shifting loyalty, unspoken jealousy, and lurking desperation, three men living just this side of destitution plan a robbery. The loot is a rare coin collection, but the real currency in American Buffalo is language. The dialogue is unmistakably Mamet's: clipped, elliptical and profane, but at the same time poetic and telling. This will be the first Third Rail production with a guest director. Daniel Stern is best known for his film acting career, but his artistic roots are in the theatre, and we're thrilled to collaborate with him on this production.
Craig Wright Writes for Third Rail
The Gray Sisters by Craig Wright, April 30 - May 30, 2010
Third Rail presents its first commissioned work! From the company's inception, Craig Wright has been one of our favorite, and most frequently produced, playwrights. Recent Tragic Events, The Pavilion, and Grace have been award-winning highlights in our brief history. After seeing our production of Grace, Craig was so impressed with our handling of his work that he offered to pen a script especially for Third Rail. Needless to say, we leapt at the offer. With The Gray Sisters, Craig is developing a script especially for our actresses. Four sisters unravel their family's history, and in the process grapple with questions of love, loyalty, faith, and fate. Join us as we introduce a new work to the canon of American drama.
As you can see, the 2009-2010 season is going to be a doozy. Tickets will go on sale to new subscribers April 20th. We'll send out a reminder just before that date so you can be sure to nab your seats for this exciting "season of firsts"!
