What do a mysterious trunk, an Orwellian pizza ordering system, architectural design, tiramisu, Marilyn Monroe, Goofy, Bill Clinton, chaos theory, ropes, gags, and the world’s worst boss have in common? You’ll find out in a play that Variety described as “a wicked treat for the morbidly inclined — a bonbon filled with arsenic.” One part Albee, one part Hitchcock, one part Tarantino, Mr. Kolpert is a play we’ve been dying to produce since day one. Comedy doesn’t come much blacker or better than this.
*Please note that this production is intended for mature audiences.
In this call-to-arms, Mach shares an eye-opening look at the current state of America’s public education system. Navigating a minefield of competition, quotas, retention, privatization, class size, corporate welfare, and litigation is tricky on the best of days, but what does any of it have to do with teaching Johnny to read? Told with empathy and humor, and featuring a rich cast of characters, A NOBLE FAILURE is startling in its immediacy and passionate in its plea to ‘Save Our Schools’.
A Noble Failure will be presented as a part of Fertile Ground 2013, Portland’s festival of new and developing works. A limited number of seats will be available for purchase each night using a Fertile Ground festival pass.
It’s Election Day, 2010 and what begins as a simple visit by the Apple siblings to their uncle transforms into an examination of 21st Century American politics. Chekhovian in spirit, HOPEY CHANGEY is the first play in a planned four-play cycle that annually reunites the Apple Family during events of national importance. In an exciting and ambitious project, Third Rail is delighted to be the only company in the country (besides the Public Theatre in New York) to present a new play in this series every year for the next four seasons, each featuring the same cast of Third Rail actors!
“You know when a song starts and it feels loose and chaotic? But then the drums come in and everything makes sense. That’s what he was in my life. He walked into my life and everything made sense. He was the moment when the drums come in.”
Sara’s life is thrown into disorder when her husband, Chris, dies unexpectedly. Trying to cope with her loss she discovers a compilation tape, apparently made for her by him. The only thing is, by the time he died, Chris was profoundly deaf. With the help of a friend she begins to unravel the secret of the tape, hoping that it may be his final message to her from beyond. STATIC is a beautiful, vibrant play of love, music, movement, and the difficulties of connecting no matter the language. In a bold theatrical move, it is also written to be performed bilingually in both English and sign language.

Abby and Zack are newlyweds subletting an apartment in the Belleville area of Paris. She’s a yoga instructor and he’s a physician with Doctor Without Borders. Their life is idyllic, if not especially noteworthy. That is until Abby walks in on Zack with his pants literally around his ankles.
As she starts pulling at little threads having to do with how Zack spends his day, BELLEVILLE builds toward a climax that asks if we can ever truly know another person. This sexy, funny, scary, and tense pseudo-thriller from one of America’s hottest new playwrights will unnerve as quickly as it entertains.

Tommy crashes in a room in his uncle’s house, does odd-jobs here and there, tries get-rich-quick schemes with his buddy, Doc, and keeps his ex-wife and kids at arm’s length. Then one night, he defends a young woman from a violent act, a choice which fills both their lives with unexpected consequences. Mystery lies around every corner and they soon find out the past won’t let go so easily. This play is a joyous, frightening, funny, and ultimately gorgeous meditation on the possibility of redemption. An amazing new work by one of the great writers and poets of the theatre.
